Canada’s boreal forest is being destroyed by tar sands mining. Millions of birds are having their nesting grounds threatened or destroyed completely from the mining and drilling in these wetlands. Up to 166 million birds are at risk. This project is also producing a huge amount of global warming, causing some to dub it the “most destructive project on earth.” Please ask Minister Jim Prentice to put a stop to the mining.

The Utah Bureau of Land Management just finalized some plans to open up millions of wilderness acres to off-road vehicle use and energy development. Please ask President Elect Obama to reverse this decision and protect these wild lands.

Are you as scared as I am about your kids not breathing in clean air as they grow up? Hell, are you worried about YOURSELF coughing up a lung from a smog-induced coughing fit? Do warm winters make your head spin? (Yes, I know not everyone loves a white Christmas like I do, but it just ain’t natural for 80 degree weather in February in the Midwest, folks!) Do you ache for more solar power, wind power, and other forms of renewable energy? Do you think America needs more green jobs (or just more jobs period!)?
If so, come on over to the League of Conservation Voter’s website and sign the “Repower, Refuel and Rebuild America” Petition that’s asking for President Elect Obama to take on energy within his first 100 days of office.
Do you have other ideas for what Obama should do during his first 100 days in office? Alternet, one of my favorite news sources, is having a “100 Words for 100 Days” essay contest for you to write about those ideas. They’ll be posting the best ones on their site. Learn more here, or submit your essay to 100@alternet.org.

Oh, Georgie Porgie. How I will NOT be sad to see you go.
As much as I was elated when Obama was declared The Great Victor on Election Night (I cried, dribbled snot, did a little dance in my pajamas and slept well for the first time in nearly…8 years), I knew, you knew, your mom knew that ‘ol W was still like a rattlesnake in the bushes, just poised to strike in his final days of office.
One such attack is the one underway on the Clean Trucks Program. It’s nearly brand-new, and a wicked clean air and anti-global warming program that the rest of the nation should, like, take notes from and stuff.
Bush and Pals, however, are trying to block the program to support–what else?–special interests. Reducing emissions by 80% may be all well and good for, you know, our lungs and the environment and babies and stuff, but it’s not good for bidness.
So tell Congress that we’re not buying it. We think that clean air is kind of a big deal, and they should too.
